Busy day of sports at Mattituck … in the rain

A full slate of sports action starts at 4 p.m. today at Mattituck High School, all part of this year’s Homecoming festivities.

The day begins with the girls volleyball and tennis teams starting at 4 p.m. The volleyball team hosts Mount Sinai, a four-time runner-up in Class B, and the tennis team hosts Longwood.

At 4:30 the girls soccer team, fresh off a 1-0 win over Shoreham-Wading River Thursday afternoon, plays host to Southampton. Mattituck coach Ed Barbante said the game will be played on the JV field to save the varsity field from taking an extra beating on a rainy day.

At 7 p.m. under rented lights the boys soccer team will host McGann-Mercy. And for those interested in the pigskin, the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island football team hosts The Stony Brook School at 7 p.m. at Greenport High School as the Porters look for their first win of the season.

The soccer games are expected to be played despite the rain, barring any thunder or lightning.
