Two high school girls soccer teams, Mattituck and Southold/Greenport, were looking at low player numbers individually had they gone into the 2018 season alone. And so, Mattituck/Southold/Greenport — or MSG as the team was called in shorthand — was created. READ
The success of the first-year Mattituck/Southold/Greenport girls soccer team was validated by a Suffolk County Class B championship and a trip to the Long Island final. Then, just like that, MSG’s season was all over — gone with the wind. READ
Mattituck/Southold/Greenport has come a remarkably long way since the start of the high school girls soccer season. From an 0-6 start, the first-year consolidated team from the Mattituck and Southold/Greenport programs is now a county champion.
MSG’s first title of any kind did not come easily Monday in the Suffolk County Class B final. The North Forkers overcame a two-goal deficit, scored an equalizer with 32 seconds left in the second half and battled Babylon for 110 minutes of soccer that ended with the score tied, 3-3, before prevailing in an extended penalty-kick tiebreaker, 5-4. In soccer, it’s not always how you start, but how you finish.

In high school girls soccer, there are no golden goals — and there was no Golden goal Friday night, although Jillian Golden made her return to Mattituck/Southold/Greenport following an injury. But after 80 scoreless minutes, East Hampton and MSG went to 20 minutes of mandatory overtime. It was during the added time when MSG did what it couldn’t do during regulation time: score.
Overtime goals by Amber Rochon and Claire Gatz carried MSG to a 2-0 victory in a homecoming game at Mattituck High School. The result earned MSG a home playoff game, said coach Chris Golden. (more…)
Since Sabrina Basel wasn’t feeling too well, Mattituck/Southold/Greenport girls soccer coach Chris Golden started the senior defender at outside midfielder. Less than a minute into the match, Basel must have been feeling a whole lot better.
Just moments after the opening kickoff, Basel scored her first goal of the season, kick-starting MSG’s 7-1 throttling of Port Jefferson Thursday at Southold High School. READ
