Town, County officials want to fill Capital One space quickly

VERA CHINESE PHOTO | The Mattituck Capital One bank office will soon be closing its doors.

Southold is joining forces with Suffolk County to attempt to retain the 135 jobs Capital One Bank is moving out of Mattituck.

Workers at the former North Fork Bank operations center office in Mattituck will be given the option of moving to Capital One offices in Melville or Richmond, Va., but Supervisor Scott Russell said Tuesday that he and county officials plan to court another business to take over the Mattituck location.

While it remains unclear what Capital One intends to do with the Mattituck property, Mr. Russell said there is a covenant on the land that prevents it from being used for retail purposes. The center was built as a supermarket and later became North Fork Bank’s headquarters.

In a press release Monday, County Legislator Ed Romaine said he is working with the town to preserve the jobs in Mattituck.

“Losing these jobs may have a significant impact on Southold,” he said in the release. “I am hopeful as one door closes another may open. I am working with Supervisor Russell and Commissioner Yves Michel and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Workforce Housing to minimize the job loss and ensure those that do lose jobs have all the tools necessary to seek new employment.”
