Summer returned to the North Fork for Columbus Day weekend, much to the delight of everyone who was missing those lazy days. It was a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy all that the North Fork has to offer this time of year.
Cristina Commesso and Steven Witzke were especially grateful for the beautiful weather since last Sunday was their wedding day. Family and friends enjoyed a reception at the Estate at East Wind in Wading River, where the couple’s 4-year-old nephew and ringbearer, Adam Witzke, wowed the crowd with his dancing skills. Congratulations to the newlyweds! All the best in your new Southold home.
Southold Elementary School students were visited by members of Southold Fire Department Tuesday for Fire Prevention Week. It’s a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors or, in some cases, make sure you have smoke detectors in your home.
Charles Hydell, a 2011 Southold High School graduate, recently completed United States Navy basic training in Great Lakes, Ill., and is currently in “A” school in Pensacola, Fla. His proud family would like to wish him a belated happy birthday. Charles celebrated on Sept. 28.

Tickets are now available for Southold Rotary Club’s annual scallop dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Soundview. The donation is $25 for a complete scallop dinner — or chicken if you prefer. See any Rotarian to purchase tickets. Proceeds benefit local scholarships and various community projects.
Southold High School students will enjoy a brief respite from classes this Friday to participate in Spirit Day activities. A wheelbarrow race, crab soccer, tug-of-war and an eating contest are among the games planned for this much-anticipated day.
