Most North Fork school districts improved their Advanced Placement scores last year compared to the 2010-11 school year, according to a new report.

The College Board, an international not-for-profit group that offers both AP and SAT programs to help prepare students for college, released Wednesday the latest AP results for the class of 2012. While those who achieve a 3 or above on a five-point scale can earn credits at SUNY colleges, most other colleges require a score of 4 or better to give credit. Of the 470 exams taken by Greenport, Southold and Mattituck high school students, 285 scored a 3 or higher.

The report also shows a total of 246 local high school students took AP exams last year, an increase of 17 students compared to the prior year.

Over half of those students were from Mattituck High School, which has had the most amount of students taking AP exams for the past two years. In 2012, 169 students took 323 exams with 61.3 percent scoring 3 or higher. During the 2010-11 school year, 114 students took 259 exams with 54.8 percent receiving top scores.

Greenport High School had the largest percentage of exams scoring a 3 or higher, with top marks received on 30 out of 32 exams taken. The latest results also showed a significant increase in achievement compared to the the 2010-11 school year when a 3 or higher was received on 73.3 percent of the 30 exams scored.

Southold High School is the only local school that had less students taking AP exams last year compared to the previous school year.  In 2012, there were a total of 57 test-takers, down eight students from the previous school year. It was also the only district that had a decrease in the percentage of students scoring 3 or higher. In 2012, 50.9 percent of students received top marks, down from 52.3 percent during the 2010-11 school year. The report shows five more exams were taken in 2012 compared to the previous school year.
