Update: Accused rapist held on $250,000 cash bail

Update: Rudy Orlando Cruz-Ventura, 33, pleaded not guilty to a first-degree rape charge during an arraignment Thursday afternoon in Southold Town Justice Court.

Southold Town Justice Rudolph Breuer ordered Mr. Cruz-Ventura be held on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond.

He’s due back in court Aug. 16.

Mr. Cruz-Ventura was arrested at a business on Shelter Island Wednesday, authorities said. The alleged sexual assault occurred at Goldsmith’s Inlet Beach in Peconic Tuesday night.

The victim was also a 33-year-old resident of Greenport, police said.

Original Story: A 33-year-old Greenport man has been arrested in connection with a rape that occurred at Goldsmith’s Inlet Beach in Peconic Tuesday night, Southold Town Police said.

Rudy Orlando Cruz-Ventura, 33, was arrested at a business on Shelter Island Wednesday, police said.

The sex assault occurred at the beach, located at the end of Mill Lane, at about 9:30 Tuesday night, police said. The victim was also a 33-year-old resident of Greenport, police said.

Mr. Cruz-Ventura is being held at Southold Town Police headquarters, pending his arraignment Thursday in Southold Town Justice Court on one count of first-degree rape, police said.

Shelter Island Police aided in the investigation.
