Featured Letter: Reed family sends thanks to community

To the editor:

Laddie, Elliot, Lorraine and Jessica Reed would like to express their deepest thanks to everyone who supported their family during the difficult time of the passing of their son, brother, husband and father — coach Phil Reed of Central Islip. 

It was a great honor to have everyone come together to celebrate Phil’s life. We want to thank Phil’s wonderful and devoted family, friends, colleagues, fellow coaches, student athletes, the Southold athletic director, principal, school staff and community. In addition, the Mary Haven administrator, doctor, nursing staff and clients who supported coach Reed at the time of his blessed and loving celebration.

Coach Reed gave us so much love and joy. He was an illustrious, godsend of a person whose smile lit up any room.

The Reed family wants to extend its appreciation to the entire East End community, including Bob Liepa, sports editor of The Suffolk Times, for the magnificent help and consideration.

“The good die young.” Abraham, Martin and John were national icons who left profound effects on American society. Their drive and character provided the launching pad for each one’s legacy. Fortunately and deservedly, Long Island has an army of its own who qualify for the distinction of being revered and remembered for their relentless attempts at improving our lives, especially for our children.

Coach Phil Reed, who died on Jan. 26 at 59, fits the mold perfectly.
