For nearly five decades, the annual chicken barbecue at the Greenport Fire Department has brought the village together for good food, summer fun and a tradition that shows no signs of slowing down.

“It’s just a big outing for the community to get together, everybody to be as one,” said 32-year Greenport resident Doreen Clark. “It’s nice to get out of the house and have a good time enjoying the summer.”

The chicken barbecue is more than a summer meal, it acts as a fundraiser that helps support the volunteer fire department and brings the community together.

“It’s a really nice event that brings friends, family and neighbors, young and old together,” said Bill Robbins, a GFD first lieutenant and co-chair of the barbecue.

The meal included chicken, corn, potatoes, watermelon and homemade coleslaw. Greenport Harbor Brewing Company supplied the beer for attendees 21 and older.

“The best part about this event is the fact that it brings everybody in the community together to celebrate our volunteer fire department, and those who are hardworking individuals that help keep us safe,” said the Village of Greenport Mayor Kevin Steussi. “It’s one of the largest fundraisers the fire department does to bring in some funding to help them with supplies and more to support the volunteers. I look forward to it every summer.”

For longtime attendees like Ms. Clark, the barbecue has become a summer tradition that keeps bringing her back year after year.

“It will never disappoint,” she said. “The food is delicious.”

A bit further west, the Peconic Bay Yacht Club was home to the annual Summer Soirée Gala benefitting the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation. The organization honored Samy Sabil for his contributions to the foundation and the community.
