North Fork organizations set to take part in 37th annual International Coastal Cleanup

The 37th annual International Coastal Cleanup returns Saturday, with events planned at several North Fork beaches.

Volunteers around the world are spending a few hours removing trash from their beaches, but on the East End, the North Fork Environmental Council is hosting two local cleanups: Breakwater Beach in Mattituck from 1 to 3 p.m. and Iron Pier Beach in Jamesport from 9 to 11 a.m.

Out in Southold, the Southold Peconic Civic Association and Little Fish, a restaurant on 50 N Sea Drive are partnering with Kenney’s/McCabe Beach Civic Association to clean Sound-front beaches on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Instructions say to meet at Little Fish for coffee and the itinerary for the day. 

Farther east, Orient Beach State Park will host a cleanup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with participants encouraged to stay longer if they wish. The rain date is Sunday.

Elsewhere in the region, Hallock State Park Preserve in Jamesport from 10 a.m. to noon and Wildwood State Park in Wading River from 9:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m., though park officials said participants often stay later.

The International Coastal Cleanup is a worldwide effort supported by more than 100 countries. Thousands of volunteers clean more than 100 miles of shoreline along New York State beaches each year under the leadership of the American Littoral Society.
