Back to class: Mattituck-Cutchogue opens new school year
Backpacks were packed, classrooms were ready and students hauled their supplies through the doors as the new school year got underway Wednesday.
The first day of school brought a familiar mix of first-day jitters and excitement, as Mattituck-Cutchogue district children reunited with friends and teachers prepared to settle into the routines of a new academic year.
Cutchogue East Elementary School welcomed a new kindergarten class and returning first- through sixth-graders with music blasting in celebration as the students were dropped off and bussed in.
Superintendent Shawn Petretti said the district’s opening-day transportation and drop-off went smoothly, crediting Christine Springer, who is overseeing transportation this year, and Sunrise Bus.
“The first day of school is always an exciting time, and it is incredibly rewarding to see the energy of our students, teachers, and staff as they come together and share in the anticipation of all that a new school year brings,” Mr. Petretti said.
Mr. Petretti also said the district is entering the year with three-year strategic commitments focused on learning, the student experience, preparing for the future and taking action.
“They will help guide our work as we continue to provide meaningful opportunities and experiences for every student in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District,” he said.
Mattituck-Cutchogue the first North Fork district back in session. Students in Southold, Greenport and Oysterponds return to school next Tuesday.
