Andrew Joseph McGowan Jr.

Andrew Joseph McGowan Jr., M.D., died at his home in Greenport, N.Y., Jan. 30.

He led a life of service to others, many of them the least fortunate among us.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois; his children, Jackie (Eamonn Bowles), Andy (Mary Terry) and Michael (Lauren); his grandchildren, Laura, Christine and Claire Bowles and Andrew, Christopher, Jane, and Jack McGowan; and a large, loving group of family and friends. He considered himself a very lucky man.

Andy grew up in Ozone Park, Queens.

He was a proud and loyal graduate of Chaminade High School (1950), College of the Holy Cross (1954) and Yale University School of Medicine (1958), whose Association of Yale Alumni in Medicine gave him its Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

He was a urologist and trained at University of Virginia, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, where he was the Chief of the Urology Division for 16 years.

Andy also served in the United States Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base Hospital and was affiliated with Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola and St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn.

A kind, compassionate, dedicated physician, he was beloved by patients. After his retirement from medical practice, he became president of Metropolitan Lithotriptor Associates and was a consultant in urology for the Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company.

Andy was on the board of directors of the Catholic Medical Mission Board for 16 years and its Chairman for six. He personally undertook fact-finding missions, performed surgery, delivered medical care, medicine and supplies and recruited fellow surgeons to help people in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras and Kenya. Andy and Lois also funded the construction of a residence for visiting doctors at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nairobi.

He had been president of the New York Section of the American Urological Association, chairman of the Section of Urology of the Medical Society of the State of New York, chairman of the Section of Urology of New York Academy of Medicine, a member of the board of the Yale Medical School Alumni Fund and chairman of its Special Reunion Gift Committee. He was a longtime member of Garden City Golf Club and North Fork Country Club.

Andy loved God, his patients, his family, his friends, the home he built with Lois and golf.

In lieu of flowers, he asked that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Visitors were received Feb. 2 at Coster-Heppner funeral home. A funeral Mass took place Feb. 3 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
