After another season of North Fork gridlock, the North Fork Traffic Task Force met recently to begin brainstorming solutions for 2019.

A recent meeting, according to Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith, brought a broad range of officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Suffolk County Transit Bus, state Department of Transportation, the Long Island Farm Bureau, Harbes Farm, Southold Town and police departments from both towns together to discuss traffic and other safety concerns. But ultimately the victims were left with solid waste that often contained toxic and acutely hazardous materials like arsenic, lead and mercury. READ

William Beebe grew up in Orient, a small-town boy from an idyllic hamlet surrounded by farms and saltwater and reachable by a narrow causeway that made it nearly an island at the tip of the North Fork, a place by itself. In the weeks and months following the July 2015 limousine crash in Cutchogue that left four young women dead, law enforcement pulling over limousines and party buses for inspection became a familiar sight on busy East End weekends. The tragedy made all too clear the danger posed by such large vehicles, in which most passengers are not properly secured with safety belts, and emphasized that much closer attention must be paid to improving safety.
