Two poster-sized photos that are to be hung in the Mattituck High School wrestling room are a reminder of who Mattituck/Greenport/Southold no longer has. That is Jack and Luke Bokina, who last season became the first twins from Long Island to win state championships.

Shawn Petretti straddled two worlds while sitting in the bleachers Thursday night. The Mattituck High School principal had more than a casual interest in the high school wrestling match between Shoreham-Wading River and Mattituck/Greenport/Southold. That’s because his sons, John Carl and Tristan, both wrestle for Shoreham.

It was an intriguing case of a principal watching his own flesh and blood wrestle against the team he himself once coached in the Mattituck building where he works. Talk about conflicted interests. READ

Bittersweet is not the Bokina brothers’ favorite flavor.

Twin brothers Jack and Luke Bokina know a thing or two about bittersweet. What the two Mattituck/Greenport/Southold high school wrestlers experienced at the state meet last year was the epitome of bittersweet. They both reached state finals, only to be disappointed in the end with defeats. READ

Reese Costello began playing lacrosse at 8 years old, developing skills through the North Fork Lacrosse Club. As an eighth-grader he joined the junior varsity of the Mattituck/Greenport/Southold boys lacrosse team. A year later, he was among the call-ups to varsity when the team reached the playoffs. READ

Two Mattituck/Greenport/Southold high school wrestlers are going big time.

The pride of the Tuckers, seniors James Hoeg and Tanner Zagarino, who this past season became the first state champions in Mattituck history, will both wrestle for top NCAA Division I teams next season. The two training partners will not be far from each other, either. They are both headed to the state of Pennsylvania. Hoeg has committed to national champion Penn State while Zagarino made Pitt his choice on Sunday.

As the old saying goes, defense wins championships. The Mount Sinai High School girls lacrosse team knows a thing or two about both.

Mount Sinai has won three state championships in the past five years and defense had more than a little to do with it. That said, Al Bertolone believes this current defense may be the best he has had since taking over as Mount Sinai’s coach in 2008.
