Shawn Widmyer-Natale’s whole world changed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 30s.
About 35 years ago, when Dr. Louis Avvento was completing his residency, he decided to enter the oncology and hematology field, which studies cancer.
“I was fascinated by the disease itself,” said the 62-year-old Southampton resident. “We had very little in the way of drugs back then and I was inspired to join something in its infancy to hopefully see it grow.” READ

The East End Women’s Network selected Melanie McEvoy of Laurel as its 2015 Woman of the Year.
Ms. McEvoy has served on the EEWN Board of Directors for the last three years, is the vice president of the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and recently worked as the event chair of the Pink Pearl Gala, which raised nearly $50,000 to benefit breast-cancer patients and survivors on the North Fork.
