Southold Police Report

A fisherman from Brentwood was arrested on a felony assault charge after he allegedly hit another fisherman in the head with a flashlight early Saturday morning, severely lacerating him. Both men were fishing at Goldsmith Inlet in Peconic.

Just after 3 a.m., Julio Lopez, 51, reportedly struck Emmanuel Rosales, 30, of Franklin Square following an argument with Mr. Rosales and a group of other fishermen from Franklin Square. Police responded to the scene after another fishermen had dialed 911 on his cell phone when he heard shouts for help.

Mr. Lopez had fled by the time police arrived. He was stopped on Route 48 in Mattituck, according to Southold Town Police Captain Martin Flatley. He said that Mr. Lopez also had a laceration on his head. Both men were taken to ELIH and treated for their injuries.

Only Mr. Lopez was charged because, after an investigation that was made difficult by a language barrier, police determined that he instigated the physical confrontation, Capt. Flatley said.
