John Peter Schmidt of Cutchogue died May 23 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 72.
He was born Jan. 19, 1939, in Valley Stream to Frances and John Schmidt. He married Margaret Jensen on Oct. 14, 1961, in Troy, N.Y., and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1963. He and his wife settled in Baldwin, where he worked for Hendrickson Brothers, a construction company, for many years.
He was a member of the Massapequa Masonic Lodge, the Long Island Mineral and Geology Society and the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council. According to family members, he was a history buff, enjoyed reading and loved to walk on the beach with his metal detector.
Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife; his daughter, Jean, of Cutchogue, and his son, John, of Plainedge, N.Y.; his sister, Susan Spiegler of Texas; and three grandchildren.
Visiting hours will take place Wednesday, May 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A service will be held Thursday, May 26, at Cutchogue United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Cutchogue Cemetery.
