Robert E. Anderson

The Anderson family is sorry to announce the passing of Robert E. Anderson of Camp Mineola, Mattituck, N.Y., on Nov. 3.

Son of Edward W. and Edith May (VanWickler) Anderson, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; his children, Brian, Glenn, Wayne, Dean and Arlene; and his sister, Ruth Reeve of Oak Ridge, Tenn. He has six beautiful grandchildren who love and miss him dearly: Eric, Brittney, Andrew, Abigail, Amanda and Alicia.

Robert loved sailing, swimming and Great Peconic Bay activities most of his life. He was a lifelong active member of the Presbyterian Church, beginning in Hempstead, then Huntington and finally Mattituck. Robert and Shirley wintered in Rio Verde, Ariz., for 25 years.

Robert enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July 1945 at the age of 17. After his discharge in 1947, he attended Pratt Institute, graduating with a B.S. in chemical engineering. Robert helped develop a special softball and a softball league for the blind during a long career with the Bell System. He was a founding officer of the Suffolk branch of the International Dyslexia Society and a soccer coach. For 15 years, he was the local Cub Scout leader. Bob also served as commodore and secretary of the Mattituck Yacht Club.

The family has planned a memorial service at Mattituck Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Nov. 26 — Robert’s 84th birthday — at 11 a.m. The church parlor will be open at 10 a.m. for those who wish to visit with the family. Immediately following the service, family and friends will hold a post-memorial celebration of his life at the family residence by his beloved Great Peconic Bay, followed by a repast.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Mattituck Presbyterian Church, 12605 Main Road, Mattituck, NY 11952, or online at http://mattpres.com, would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home.
