BLOG RECAP: Greenport falls 73-50 in Class D finals

GARRET MEADE FILE PHOTO | Gavin Dibble scored 39 points in his last game for Greenport. Today the Porters play for the Class D county crown.

The Greenport boys basketball team fell 73-50 Monday afternoon against Bridgehampton in the Class D county championship game at Suffolk Community College in Selden. The Porters were aiming for their seventh title in the last eight years.

Instead, the Killer Bees — a basketball dynasty in the ’80s and ’90s — claimed their first county championship since 2000.

The Porters (12-7) got out to a fast start and led by as many as nine in the first quarter. But the Bees turned it on in the second and third quarter to turn the game into a blowout by the fourth.

Thanks their size inside and hot shooting from the outside, the Killer Bees (8-11) pulled away in the third quarter.

It was the second straight year Greenport lost in the county finals. Last season ended with a loss to Port Jefferson in the Class C final.

Bridgehampton won two of three matchups between the teams this season.

Below was a live blog from Monday’s game. Be sure to check back for a full recap.
