Real Estate: Local experts offer tips on finding the right contractor

BABARAELLEN KOCH PHOTO | Experts like Jamesport builder Tom Gabrielsen (above) say picking the right contractor for a project is arguably the most important part of the process.

It’s tax return time. And for many area homeowners that means tackling those pricier projects on the to-do list.

But if you’re not a do-it-your-selfer, it will get even pricier with the cost of labor. Finding the right contractor at the right price can pose a huge challenge, but experts stress the importance of taking your time and making sure this crucial part of the remodeling process isn’t an afterthought.

Choosing a quality architect, garnering multiple estimates, as well as checking references and past work, are among the most important things a homeowner can do when choosing a general contractor, National Association of the Remodeling Industry officials and local contractors say.

So before you even think of signing on the dotted line, take a look at this week’s edition of The Suffolk Times for tips to make sure you make the right decision.
