Unbeaten Fogarty rolls in 28-3 rout

They lowered the boom in a hurry, a real hurry.

Fogarty Air Conditioning Service, after falling behind by 1-0 to Community Speech and Language Learning Center in the first inning, kicked up its intensity a notch the rest of the way. Fogarty exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning and went on to rout Community Speech, 28-3, last Thursday night in the North Fork Women’s Softball League at the Polo Grounds in Greenport.

Jill Tapper, Cathy Checklick, Holli Bollman and Diana Stulsky all had three hits for first-place Fogarty (7-0).

Tapper ignited the Fogarty comeback in the top of the second with a single. Courtney Meringer and Checklick both walked. Tanya Rivera and Kathleen Tergersen each ripped a run-scoring single. Kathy Thompson followed with a sacrifice fly. Elaine Milovich singled. Bollman and Stulsky capped the rally with two-run singles.

Fogarty added five more runs in the third as Thompson singled home a run, Milovich walked with the bases loaded, and Bollman had a run-scoring single. Fogarty lowered the boom in the fourth, erupting for 13 more runs. Rivera and Tergersen each drew bases-loaded walks, Stulsky lined a two-run double and Meringer smacked a grand slam to left-center field.

Tapper, Meringer and Checklick all singled home runs in the fifth.

Stulsky pitched the first four innings, allowing only one run, to get the win. Meringer pitched the fifth inning.

The loss dropped Community Speech’s record to 0-7.

In last Thursday’s other game, red-hot Allstate topped Eric’s Lawn Care, 13-10. Eric’s Lawn Care loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two out. But Allstate (4-3) got out of the jam on a sparkling defensive play by first baseman Jill Schroeder, who gunned a runner out at home plate to end the game. Allstate catcher Carol Leonard made the tag to secure the win.

Allstate jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four times in the first and three more times in the second. Allstate was sparked by the hitting of Schroeder and Erin Bednoski, who each had three hits and knocked in a pair of runs.

Allstate added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Jess Michaelis had a three-run double.

“It was a great game,” Schroeder said. “The score was close the whole time, but we managed to stay ahead and clinch the game.”
