Southold Police Report

A pair of arrests for driving while intoxicated were made by Southold Town Police in the past week.

At 3:45 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, Matthew B. Ireland, 16, of Mattituck was charged with felony DWI after his car was stopped at an undisclosed location in Mattituck because his taillights were reportedly not working. Because he had a 14-year-old passenger in his vehicle, police also charged Mr. Ireland with endangering the welfare of a minor. He was held overnight for arraignment.

William Stephen Taggart Jr., 59, of Southold was arrested for aggravated DWI just after noon on Aug. 24 after police received a call about a possible drunk driver leaving the North Fork Animal Welfare League in a blue Pontiac Grand Prix. He was found on Route 48 and charged after police said they determined he was intoxicated.

* A Centereach man reported that someone broke the passenger side window of his car during the day on Aug. 23 and stole his iPod, which was on the seat of the car, which was parked near the Greenport utility company on Moores Lane.

* A blue Schwinn 10-speed bicycle was reported stolen from behind a business on Main Street in Greenport on the evening of Aug. 25. The bike had a carrying rack over its rear wheel.

* A Brentwood man was charged with unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident after being involved in an accident at the corner of Route 48 and Love Lane in Mattituck Friday night. Jose Arriaza, 39, was reportedly speeding past the intersection on Route 48 when Michael DeVito, 46, of Mattituck entered the intersection, failing to yield the right of way to Mr. Arriaza. Mr. Arriaza reportedly left the scene and was stopped by police three miles east of the accident.

* A driver who lost control of his car crashed through a chain link fence and several shrubs on East Road in Mattituck Sunday night, according to police reports. Driver Manarides Panagiotes, 21, of Astoria was not charged or injured.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
