Rocky Point staved off a second-half rally from Mattituck/Greenport/Southold to register a 12-8 non-league boys lacrosse victory at home Monday afternoon.

Junior attackman Tom Hoeg led the Tuckers (2-0) with four goals as the visitors pulled to within 10-7 on Tim Schmidt’s goal — the Tuckers’ fourth in a row — with 10 minutes 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

But the Eagles tallied the next two goals behind Vinnie Toronto (four goals) and Anthony De Vito (three goals) to give themselves some breathing room.

Rocky Point bolted to a 4-1 advantage with 6:27 left in the opening period behind a pair of goals by Anthony DeVito and single tallies by Tim Yannucci and Kyle Gardner.

The first of Hoeg’s three goals helped move the Tuckers to within 5-3 with 9:35 to go in the second quarter. But Rocky Point grabbed an 8-3 halftime lead as Toronto recorded a hat trick in the period.

Jake Wandle scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the third quarter to lift Rocky Point into a 10-3 lead before Tyler Siefert and Hoeg found the net to close out the quarter with a 10-5 deficit.

After scrimmages against Riverhead on Wednesday and Shoreham-Wading River on Saturday, Mattituck will open its Suffolk County League IV schedule at Babylon on March 30.
