Video: Former New York Met Lenny Dykstra assists motorists after accident in Laurel

Nails never fails, or so he says.

Former New York Met Lenny Dykstra, a leadoff hitter on the 1986 World Series team, came to the aid of victims of a minor accident in Laurel Tuesday by calling 911, according to a video the former major leaguer posted on Twitter.

He earned the nickname “Nails” during his playing days for aggressive and fearless play.

The two-car accident occurred on Main Road in Laurel near Herricks Lane Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Dykstra says in the video he was the first on scene, called 911 and tried to calm down the drivers.

“As a man of the people, I’m here to do whatever I can to help,” he says in the video. “Nails reporting from North Fork.”

The pinned tweet had been viewed 26,000 times as of Wednesday morning.

Mr. Dykstra was with attorney Ron Hariri of Aquebogue.

Mr. Dykstra ended up playing the majority of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. His final season was in 1996. His rise and fall has been well documented. As recently as October Mr. Dykstra was charged in New Jersey for possession of cocaine, marijuana and MDMA, according to media reports. The New Yorker published a profile of Mr. Dykstra in August titled “Lenny Dykstra Has More To Say.

He was later spotted Tuesday night at Phil’s Waterfront Bar and Grill.
