While a torrential downpour pelted players, coaches and spectators during the second half at Southold High School on Thursday afternoon, interim head coach Lucas Grigonis turned to someone on the sidelines and said, “The weather has been like our season: stormy, slightly wet and uncomfortable.”

Grigonis wasn’t kidding.

Joe Silvestro has never played for a county champion Southold High School boys soccer team. Not that he didn’t come close — several times.

Last year, Southold lost to Greenport in the Suffolk County Class C final, 1-0. And both years prior to that, the First Settlers fell to Pierson/Bridgehampton, both by 1-0 scores.

“It’s always like a heartbreaker at the end,” said Silvestro, a four-year varsity player who played in all three of those finals.

Silvestro wants to change that. READ

Similarly to judging books by their covers, one should not judge a soccer team solely by its record. That’s especially true when comparing two teams from different classifications and leagues.

Records can be misleading and are hardly a foolproof measure of what a team can do on the field. READ
