Walter J. Cook

Walter J. Cook of East Marion died March 26 at the age of 87.

Born Jan. 2, 1924, in Arshamonaque, N.Y., to John and Frances (Talocka) Cook, he attended school in Orient and was a graduate of Greenport High School. He served in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean War.

On March 28, 1948, Mr. Cook married Barbara Ketcham, and in 1955, he built their home on Gillette Drive in East Marion, where he lived for the rest of his life. Retired from Plum Island Animal Disease Center, he was a former chief of the East Marion Fire Department and a longtime treasurer of the East Marion Post Office War Memorial Fund.

Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by his children, Judith Palmer of Germantown, Tenn., Michael, of Alameda, Calif., and Walter Jr., of East Hampton; his brother, Albert, of Greenport; his sister, Carolyne Aleksa of Cheshire, Conn.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held April 1 at East Marion Cemetery. Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
