Herbert H. Beardsley

Herbert H. Beardsley of Cutchogue passed away at home Jan. 26, 2013, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease after a full, happy and blessed life.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carolyn; his children, Nancy (Thomas) Lyon of North Babylon, N.Y., Ruth (Thomas) Beardsley Sansone of Bethany, Conn., James (Karen) Beardsley of Chevy Chase, Md., and Susan (Marcell) Easter of Charleston, S.C.; and grandchildren Victoria and Michael Lyon, Alexandra and Nicholas Beardsley, and Maxwell and George Easter.

He was born July 14, 1929, and grew up in Flushing, Queens, the son of Wilhelmina (“Minnie”) and Herbert H. Beardsley. He graduated from Columbia University and Philadelphia Divinity School and spent his entire professional life as an Episcopal priest.

He began his career as curate of the Church of the Advent in Westbury, N.Y., then became rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Gulph Mills, Pa., and returned to Advent as rector in 1965, serving there for the next 30 years. Upon his retirement, he and Carolyn moved to eastern Long Island, where he was an interim rector and supply priest to several parishes in Suffolk County for many years.

He was actively engaged and well-known in his communities as a member of or volunteer for numerous organizations. More significantly, he will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was loved and respected by all.

Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer, 13225 Sound Ave., Mattituck, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, anyone inclined to make a memorial donation is asked to give to Church of the Redeemer at the above address or to East End Hospice, www.eeh.org.
