A small fire broke out in the closet on the second floor of a Southold home Saturday afternoon, closing traffic in both directions on Route 25.

No injuries were reported and the Southold Fire Department quickly had the fire at 56995 Route 25 under control.

The origin of the fire was still under investigation, according to a Southold fire official at the scene. The home did not sustain any serious damage.

One person in the house told firefighters the fire actually started two hours earlier but he thought he had it under control, the official said. Police received a call of a fire around 4:30 p.m.

The fire official said there was heavy smoke in the house when firefighters first entered. Outside a second story window, clothes and other items where thrown onto the snowy ground.

The Cutchogue Fire Department also was called.

Route 25 was reopened to traffic shortly before 6 p.m.
