Daniel V. Duff

Daniel V. Duff of Greenport, former mayor of Garden City, died Aug. 3 at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 93.

He was born Sept. 22, 1916, in New York City to Daniel and Marie (Salzer) Duff. He graduated from Xavier High School in New York City and later from Fordham University.

He married Priscilla Booth in Flushing, N.Y., on Sept. 3, 1942,

Mr. Duff worked for Equitable Life in New York City for over 40 years, becoming senior vice president. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Garden City for many years, where he was active in the parish council and fundraising to help build a new church.

In addition to serving as mayor, Mr. Duff had been a trustee of Garden City, as well as a fire commissioner, a police commissioner and a library trustee. He also helped the town build a new library.

According to his family, Mr. Duff’s life was about raising his many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition, he enjoyed fishing and golf and belonged to the Garden City Golf Club.

Predeceased by his sister, Rita Cashin, he is survived by his wife; his children, Daniel, David, Michael, William, Priscilla, Paul, Carolyn, Elizabeth and Stephen; his brother, the Rev. Paul Duff CSC; 27 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 6, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport by Father Thomas Murray.
