Dale L. Hiestand
Dale Hiestand of Greenport and Manhattan died Dec. 26 in Manhattan. He was 85.
He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Salem, Ill., to Arthur Hiestand and Rosa Hampstead and was raised in Illinois. He attended Columbia University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After the war he began his teaching career at Columbia University, first as an assistant professor and later as professor, tenured professor and professor emeritus. He retired in 1995.
According to his family, “As a professor of economics, he was a passionate advocate for civil rights, women’s rights in employment and minority group justice.”
On March 15, 1993, he married Rikki Samuels on the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City. They were the only couple ever to be married there.
Mr. Hiestand is survived by his wife, of Greenport; his daughter, Susan Hiestand Levy of Chicago; and four grandchildren.
