Richard R. Nemschick Sr.

Richard R. Nemshick

Richard R. Nemschick Sr. of Mattituck died on May 13, 2011, at the age of 78.  He was born February 9, 1933, and grew up in Holtsville and Medford, N.Y. He was the son of Methodius and Margaret Nemschick and was raised with six siblings. (Along with Richard there were David, John and Jerry, who live in Medford. Douglas and Doretha Guiliano live in East Patchogue, while brother Michael is in Florida.)

Richard graduated from Bayport High School in 1950 and joined the Navy in December of that year, serving for four years. After returning home from the service in 1954, he lived in Medford. In 1957, Richard joined the NYS Law Enforcement Department, working as a state trooper until 1960. Richard was also a recovery diver and, with that skill, saved six lives. He continued his law enforcement career, becoming a Suffolk County Patrolman in 1960 and from 1965-1966 he was a Sergeant Uniform Detective. A promotion in 1969 made Richard a Lieutenant Uniform Detective and in 1974 he became a Lieutenant Detective. A job at headquarters in 1982 became Richards’s new challenge. In all the precincts he was a part of during his career, he worked Auto, Arson and the Fugitive Squad.

Richard ended his distinguished law enforcement career in 1992, when he retired to become a full-time recreational fisherman and golfer. He also enjoyed reading, roller skating and was an avid skier and champion horseshoe player.

Richard was captain of his own boat, The Blue Fin, for three years and caught a 280-pound blue marlin while fishing in Hawaii. Every two years he would travel to Alaska for a weeklong fishing trip with friends.

He was also a man who enjoyed his family and loved to travel. Trips included Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and many more. He always took the road less traveled and enjoyed the beauty of life and found joy in the people he met and befriended along the way.

Having married in 1958, Richard had six children: Debbie, Rick, Matthew and Raymond Nemschick all live in New York, while Denise Charkow and Beatrice Stonebanks call California home. Richard was a proud grandfather of Leslie, who lives in California; Thomas and Claire, who live in Mattituck; and Katie, who lives in Cutchogue, and Eli Schwartz, who lives in California.

Richard’s family also includes his wife, Suzanne Auer, and her five children: Jeffrey Auer of Massachusetts, Heidi Auer of Tennessee, and Heather Sluyters, Erik Auer and Hayley Gross of Long Island. In addition, Richard had nine other grandchildren.

The family received friends at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated May 16 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment, with U.S. Navy honors, was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations to the Mattituck-Laurel Library Children’s Summer Program/Picnic, Mattituck, N.Y.; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Melville, N.Y.; or American Cancer Society (Southold Town Relay for Life), Hauppauge, N.Y., would be appreciated. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

times of life
times of sorrow
i will remember you
in reflections of tomorrow.

your humor, your smile
your careless grace
so comfortable
within the confines
of your own space

rest quietly
know you will be missed
family, friends
so many on the list.

smiles of sorrow
i will remember you
in reflections of tomorrow.
