Maria Panagopoulos

Former Orient resident Maria Panagopoulos died Nov. 17 at Cliffside Nursing Home in Cliffside, Queens. She was 86 and a 35-year resident of Astoria, Queens.

She was born in Athens, Greece, to Panagiotis Mihilaki and Xrysafo Papaioanou-Mihilaki on Feb. 7, 1925.

She married Steylianos Panagopoulos in Athens in 1946. Predeceased by her husband in 2003, she is survived by three sons, Peter, of East Marion, and Minos and Emmanuel, both of Queens; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Nov. 20 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service took place Nov. 21 at Sts. Anargyroi, Taxiarhis & Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport. Burial was at Orient Central Cemetery. Father Gerasimos Ballas officiated.
