Longtime Orient resident Jose Hernandez died May 31 at the age of 56.
Born Sept. 27, 1955, in Brooklyn to Laura Hernandez, he completed high school at BOCES.
Mr. Hernandez married Ivonne Bird in Greenport on Oct. 9, 1993. A self-employed mover, he was well-known in the community for his ability to transport items both large and small, including the contents of an entire house, friends said.
He was a member of Orient Congregational Church and did work for North Fork Head Start in Southold. He enjoyed fixing trucks and cars and loved helping people, according to friends.
Predeceased by his wife, Ivonne, in 2010 and his mother, Mr. Hernandez is survived by his twin sons, Luke and Zachary, and his sisters, Laura Garcia and Kathy Valle.
Visiting hours took place June 3 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service was held June 4 at Orient Congregational Church, followed by interment at Orient Central Cemetery.
