Severe weather, ‘large hail’ possible for North Fork

Storms currently over the Great Lakes could impact our area later today.

The National Weather Service has issued a moderate risk of severe weather across much of the area today with small craft advisories in effect for surrounding waters.

A high rip current risk is in effect for the entire South shore of Long Island.

The organization said a storm over the Great Lakes region has been tracking east and should arrive in the area late this afternoon and pass through the area this evening.

The threat of severe weather will increase this afternoon, with the possibility of “damaging winds,” “large hail” as thunderstorms develop and the service has not ruled out a possible “isolated tornado,” according to a zone forecast.

The storms are expected to move out of the area late this evening.

The Southold Town Supervisor’s office sent out a notice to residents warning of difficult weather conditions starting in the afternoon and lasting through the evening.

“We are in contact with LIPA and National Grid representatives and want to assure you that resources are in place to react to any outages that result from this storm,” the notice said.
