James Metcalfe Murray

Longtime Laurel resident James Metcalfe Murray died Oct. 16 at age 86.

He was born April 18, 1926, in Garden City to Louise (Schweitzer) and James Metcalfe Murray. He was educated in Farmingdale and served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He worked as a foreman at LILCO for 32 years and was an avid fisherman.

On May 10, 1954, Mr. Murray saved the life of an Air Force pilot whose plane went down in Peconic Bay. On Sept. 20, 1979, he saved the life of an 11-year-old boy who was attacked by a dog. His acts of bravery were featured in an April 12, 2012, Suffolk Times article, “Heroism is a Family Thing.”

Predeceased in 2006 by his wife of 56 years, Emily (née Armbrust), he is survived by his son, James Murray of Laurel; his daughter, Susan Segur of Wilmington, N.C.; and granddaughters Lauren Emily Segur and Leanne Maria Segur, also of Wilmington.

Arrangements were handled by Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
