John C. Scanlan

John C. Scanlan of Cutchogue died June 12 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 76.

The son of David and Jane Scanlan, he was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Copiague. He graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1958 and Farmingdale State College in 1972.

Mr. Scanlan served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1961 to 1965. For 20 years, he was a sergeant with the Suffolk County Police Department and retired in 1985.

From 1975 to 1988, Mr. Scanlan owned and operated The Tuna, a charter fishing boat out of Orient Point.

He was a member of the Suffolk County PBA, the Suffolk County Superior Officers Association, the Suffolk County Police Conference, the Suffolk County Police Association, Southold American Legion and Riverhead Loyal Order of the Moose.

Family members said he enjoyed fishing and spending time with family.

Predeceased by his five siblings, Mr. Scanlan is survived by his wife, Carol, and 20 nieces and nephews.

Cremation was private. Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
