Driftwood Cove fire displaces residents, sends one to hospital
A fire in a Driftwood Cove apartment on 9th Street in Greenport on Thursday afternoon displaced tenants, sent one to the hospital and caused the condemnation of nearby units.
Greenport, Southold and East Marion fire departments and Southold Police were notified of a fire stemming from apartment unit B20 around 2:30 p.m. One person was occupying the unit, exited, and was transported to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for smoke inhalation.
The adjacent unit, B21, sustained smoke damage, and unit B22, at the opposite end, did not appear to be damaged. There are five residents living across the three units.
“All three units have been condemned pending an investigation,” Southold Police Chief Steve Grattan said.
The American Red Cross also responded to the scene to assist with immediate housing needs.
The arson squad is currently investigating the cause of the blaze.
“The outcome is not as bad as it could have been,” Greenport Fire Chief Wayne Miller said at the village board meeting Thursday.
