One hurt, five left without homes after fire at Greenport apartment complex
A Greenport apartment fire Thursday afternoon sent one person to the hospital and left five residents without homes, Southold police said.
The unidentified person was helped out of a burning apartment at Driftwood Cove on Ninth Street and taken to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for smoke inhalation, officials said.
Southold police and Greenport firefighters responded around 2:30 p.m. and found a fire inside Unit B20 at the co-op complex, according to police.
That apartment suffered significant damage. Photos from the scene showed what appeared to be a blackened window, with a ladder resting against the roof nearby.
The adjacent unit, B21, sustained smoke and water damage, according to police. The fallout also extended to a third apartment, B22, at the opposite end.
“All three units have been condemned pending an investigation,” Southold Police Chief Steve Grattan told The Suffolk Times.
At the scene, fire hoses snaked along the roadway between the apartment buildings, where emergency vehicles crowded the area.
The American Red Cross and Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management helped the five residents find temporary housing.
Southold firefighters assisted Greenport at the scene, while East Marion firefighters provided standby coverage at Greenport’s firehouse.
The incident came up hours later at the Greenport Village Board meeting, where Fire Chief Wayne Miller offered a measure of relief.
“The outcome is not as bad as it could have been,” he said.
