Longtime Greenport resident William H. Hanff Jr. died Aug. 25 at his home. He was 75.

Mr. Hanff was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Greenport to Irma (Johannessen) and William Henry Hanff. He graduated from Greenport High School in 1958 and from SUNY/Maritime in 1962.

For 20 years, Mr. Hanff worked in marine transportation for Gulf Oil Corporation. He held marine transportation positions with various companies before retiring in 2004.

On July 23, 1966, he married Myrna (née Schaefer) Hanff in Port Arthur, Texas.

Mr. Hanff was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport. Family members said he enjoyed fishing, clamming and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna, of Greenport; his children, Janet of South Bend, Ind.; Diane of Waco, Texas; Susan (Glenn) Betts of Annandale, Va.; Erica (Iti) Sakharet of New York City and Bill (Peggy) of Brooklyn; his siblings, Charlotte (Dick) Mullen of Southold and Greta (Walt) Scanlan of Maryland; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received visitors Aug. 28 at Horton Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service was held Aug. 29 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, officiated by the Rev. Carl Weaver and Deacon Iris Hippner. The Rev. Ronald Wickey played the organ. Burial took place at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be made to the Stony Brook University Cancer Research Center, Eastern Long Island Hospital or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
