The East Marion Community Association will host an informational meeting on “Treacherous Ticks, Deer and Disease” this Saturday at the East Marion firehouse.

This is the third forum the group has hosted on this particular issue, EMCA president Anne Murray said, noting that the first was held in 2014.

A Lake Ronkonkoma man who was injured after falling about 20 feet through a collapsed floor at an abandoned factory building in East Marion factory is claiming that both Southold Town and Suffolk County were negligent in securing the property, contributing to his injuries. READ

The gorgeous English lavender is expected to bloom at Lavender by the Bay this weekend, a stunning occurrence that draws thousands to the East Marion lavender farm every summer.

While Orient and East Marion residents and business owners have complained of road congestion during the bloom, this year the farm’s owner has removed one acre of plants to add 100 parking spots. The farm previously had 65 spots.

A friend told me that in numerology, 2017 (numbers adding up to 10, thus 1), means the year will be all things positive, with 2016, added up to 9, being the end. It’s interesting; Google it. So I was in an upbeat mode until this first week brought multiple deaths, a horrific event at the Fort Lauderdale airport and a foot of snow, accompanied by icy roads and auto accidents. I guess the long and short of it is, one day at a time and what will be will be. I hope that doesn’t sound too clichéd. Happy 2017. (The days are getting longer.)

Cutchogue Fire Department

People in fire districts throughout New York State will head to the polls Tuesday, Dec. 13, to vote on fire commissioner elections — and in some cases, special propositions specific to their districts.

Commissioners are the elected governing body of the fire district, a taxing district that funds equipment, buildings and, in some instances, employees.

I know I say this every year, but it’s mind-boggling that 2016 is winding down and there are only three more columns before the end of the year.

Christmas events are starting to pop up and one good sign is the North Fork Chorale’s Winter Concert Series, which concludes Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. at Orient Congregational Church. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. (more…)
